There are two ways the town could have lived up to the Times’ rose-colored description of its status quo ante:
1. Beforehand, by not sexually assaulting ninth-graders, videotaping the incident, and leaving a victim asleep on her front lawn in freezing weather.
2. After the fact, by not ostracizing the victim’s siblings, firing her mom from her job, dropping the case inexplicably, and burning the family’s house down.
Now ask yourself whether either of these scenarios would be more or less likely in a metropolitan area.
Donaldina Cameron with women from the Chinese Mission Home in San Francisco, many of which were rescued from sex slavery. Judging by her age, the photograph is probably from near the end of her career. She retired in 1934.

This is the oldest version of the song I have heard, though it is obviously much older. It is almost certainly a run away slave song, but it is made into a song about escaping from prisons, because the singers are white. The verse about the “Driving Wheel” comes from a train crash song, I forget which one.
RIP Trayvon Martin
The murder trial of George Zimmerman did not allow jurors to deliberate over the fairness of Florida’s outlandishly broad self-defense laws. It did not allow them to debate the virtues of the state’s liberal gun laws or its evident tolerance for vigilantes. It did not permit them to delve into the racial profiling that took place that night by Zimmerman or into the misconduct and mischief that Martin may have engaged in long before he took that fatal trip to the store for candy. These factors, these elements, part of the more complete picture of this tragedy, were off limits to the ultimate decision-makers.
I can’t believe I haven’t put much Lucille Bogan up yet.
